Brandon Fleming begins this terrific book by recalling how at eighteen years old he woke up in a hospital bed after trying to kill himself with a drug overdose. After a horrific childhood and teenage years trying to be a "gangster," Fleming earned an athletic scholarship to college, but dropped out after a serious injury. Given a second chance at life, he returns to school determined to succeed, but realizes that he can barely read and write at the college level. Fleming becomes aware of Black literature and history, and this becomes the impetus for a relentless pursuit of knowledge. In a relatively few years, he graduates from college, becomes a teacher and debate coach, and later creates an innovative program at Harvard, despite numerous struggles along the way This improbable life journey makes for fascinating reading, and also offers many lessons, including the amazing resilience of human beings, as well as the difficult obstacles still faced by Black Americans trying to succeed in our society. Fleming writes with a clarity and honesty that kept me turning the pages. This book can be read as a kind of "Rocky" success story, but it also illustrates the power of knowledge and learning to transform young minds.
